The Campaign ‘Pig-o-meter’ is a huge wooden pig with a clock counting up the money that pig farmers are losing during the current crisis. The nationwide tour is intended to help raise awareness of the pig industry’s plight and of the campaign for a fair price for pigs.
The price of wheat has more than doubled in the past year meaning that pig farmers are now selling every pig reared at a loss. The industry is losing £6 every second, that’s over £3.5million every week.
Pig farmers are calling for a fair price for their pigs otherwise they will simply have no option but to stop rearing pigs or go bankrupt. If this were to happen the country would lose most of its pig herd as 95% of farmers have already said that they are considering halting production for good.
The UK pig industry has very high welfare standards and recent research has shown that consumers are willing to pay a few pence more on a quality pork product. All farmers are asking is that this is then passed down the chain so they receive a fair price.
